David Villar’s long run as the sole healthy position player on the 40-man not to see a Giants’ locker room this year finally ended this weekend. The callup was well deserved — he was really on a heater at the time, slugging over .800 in the month of June. I don’t know how long this stint is likely to last (it may already have concluded), but I’m glad Villar got up there at last and got in a little major league game action.
There were other things that I was happy to see this weekend as well — which is important after a road trip like the Giants just had! Carson Ragsdale (coincidentally, a college teammate of Villar’s) is finally showing what he can really do when he’s healthy and strong. The tall Floridian looks poised to pitch his way out of the Eastern League in the not-too-distant future. And Hayden Birdsong just keeps on impressing.
And you know what, it’s always a joy to watch the kids give back to their community off the field as well (something that happens a LOT behind the scenes).
So let’s say a few gratitudes, and get to the Minor Lines…
HITTER of the WEEKEND: Christian Koss (Rich), 4 for 8, 2 2b, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB, 1 K
PITCHER of the WEEKEND: Carson Ragsdale (Rich) 6.0 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 10 K
