Trying to keep up with all the day-to-day happenings in the farm system, sometimes I lose the thread of some bigger picture items. But, after long enough, my brain will emerge from deep freeze and manage to push forward a thought: “huh, haven’t seen X in a little while….”
Two such moments happened separately for me yesterday, so it’s worthwhile putting these back-burner stories up on the front burner:
Wade Meckler had been appearing steadily in games since starting his rehab while I was in Arizona a month ago. Over 14 games in the ACL and Cal League, he hit just .212. After the series opener in Stockton, a week ago last Tuesday (in which he hit a Banner Island Special HR), Meckler disappeared from the San Jose lineup and I assumed he was probably on his way up to Sacramento at that time. He never arrived, however, and it now seems clear that he had a setback in his rehab. As I noted during his games in the ACL, there were some swing and misses that caused him visible discomfort in that same wrist that took him out of action at the end of spring.
Reggie Crawford was throwing regularly every fourth day, and more recently the Giants had moved him up to every third day activity. That trail of bread crumbs ended on June 5, however, and he hasn’t appeared since then. Going back to the Statcast data in his last appearance, a 12-pitch single inning against Albuquerque, Crawford’s velocity was very clearly down that day, with the fastball topping out at 94.8 mph. Something’s clearly up with Reggie as well. As usual, we’ll have to wait to hear what that something is.
Feel free to let me know when I’m really overlooking something! It definitely does happen that things escape my notice from time to time.
Now let’s get to the players who were on the field last night.
HITTER of the NIGHT: Angel Guzman (DSLB), 2 for 3, HR (4), 2b, 2 R, 4 RBI, 2 BB
PITCHER of the NIGHT: Cesar Perdomo (SJ), 4.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
The games last night were tight! There were comebacks, and extra innings, and walk-offs galore — the type of night where winning or losing can hinge on a single mistake…
