First off, a little record straightening is in order. It’s not Mailbag day yet, but one question came in this weekend that needs addressing. This, from a text chain with my editor, prompted some thought and a little mea culpa:
Jeff
They've been saying that they don't expect Robbie Ray until after the All-Star Break, but his rehab assignment is about to run out too, one day before Austin Warren.
I mentioned last week that Warren was about to hit the 30-day mark that would normally signal the end of a pitcher’s allowable rehab assignment period. So why, my editor rightly wondered, was Ray’s rehab expected to last several weeks longer yet?
For a brief moment, I felt quite smart — I had the answer at hand! Several years back, MLB and the MLBPA added a new rehab period specific to pitchers recovering from Tommy John surgery. They alone get up to 60 days of rehab before they must be returned to the roster. Correct! This was the answer to the question about Ray.
The problem, of course, for which I had failed to account, is that Warren is also recovering from TJ. Which means that he, too, has another month of rehab of eligibility before the Giants will be forced to make a roster decision on him.
So, mea culpa for the misinformation! Set back the clocks a few weeks — nothing imminent on that score will be forthcoming by Friday.
To the weekend lines…
HITTER of the WEEKEND: Jairo Pomares (Rich), 5 for 13, 2 HR (9), 6 RBI
PITCHER of the WEEKEND: Seth Lonsway (Rich), 6.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
Pomares is our hitter of the weekend, but, of course, it was a different left-handed slugger who drew the most attention this weekend, and we’ll have a good look at that young slugger’s work in today’s weekend wrap of the Minor Lines as well:
