Look, I understand that there’s been some pretty big news in Giants’ land this week! But as I’m currently many thousands of feet above the earth and not so close to my laptop, and as this post had already been scheduled (along with the posts to come over the next week or two), we’ll only be discussing it obliquely here today, despite the many questions that this week’s news has prompted. Ok, on with the post!
Have you ever found yourself wondering about your essential nature? When the world is split into two camps, do you find yourself unsure as to which of them you belong in. Do you know whether you are a “glass half empty” or “glass half full” sort of person? You like to think of yourself as an optimistic enough type, but when your true nature reveals itself in an impulse, do you really look to the silver lining, or the darkness of the cloud?
Well friend, this is your lucky day, because have I got the litmus test for you! In one simple question, I will reveal to you the inner workings of your heart. Close your eyes, empty your mind, and tell me the first response that wells up from the deep when I ask you this question: “have the Giants had a successful year of player development, or an unsuccessful one?” The Giants have obviously rendered their judgement on the overall success of organization this year (not good enough), but that doesn’t mean this year won’t be remembered in times to come as an important step forward. So let’s hone in on this one particular slice of the whole. On the player development side, was this a successful year, or an unsuccessful one?
If your instinctual response was to say “Successful!” loud and clear while envisioning Heliot Ramos tipping his cap at the All-Star game, you, friend, are a “glass half full” sort. If, on the other hand, you immediately glowered at the thought of Marco Luciano being alternatively buried or dispatched, and found yourself hissing aloud: “Unsuccessful!” then I’m afraid you belong in the “glass half empty” portion of the world.
However, I see I’ve been a bit shoddy in the framing of my question, for a trap door appears. Perhaps in the dim recesses of your mind, you, like me, simply answered “Yes” to my binary options.
And in that case, I suppose we have ourself some more digging to do before we can arrive at a conclusion.
