So far in this year’s Depth Charts series, we’ve looked at:
The Squaaaat, in the inimitable intonation of Mike Krukow, has been, in many ways, the position that has defined Giants’ baseball for much of the past two decades. Arguably, the most consequential hours in franchise history came on the deadline day for draft signings back in 2008, when the Giants (just barely) managed to get their 1st round pick, Buster Posey, inked to a new deal (a story I’m still hoping friend of the site, Eric Flemming, will favor us with one of these days).
A decade later, the position would become synonymous with organizational drift, with the failure to turn Joey Bart, the highest overall pick the club had had since Will Clark, into an even vaguely useful part of the roster. And now, with 2020 top pick, Patrick Bailey, clasping his first career MLB Gold Glove (which I highly doubt will be his last), it’s once again becoming a defining position in what Posey’s front office braintrust hopes will become a New Era of Pitching and Defense-led competitiveness.
It’s been a bellwether position for the org, in other words. It’s also been a position that has had some waxing and waning in overall strength, as we discussed similarly with left-handed pitching. Some of that has been evaluations that turned out wrong — if you look through the There R Giants’ archives you’ll find me being high-end wrong with regards to Bart and low-end wrong with regards to Bailey on multiple occasions — but some of it has been injury and development regression making the overall picture a little less deep and strong than it appeared a couple of years previously.
Still, the Giants have made it through the post-Posey transition and handed things off to one of the premium defenders in the game. The position is once again in strong hands at the top, which is the most important part of any Depth Chart, and there are interesting names to consider today across nearly every level of the organization. So, let’s check out the good hands people with today’s chart.
