We’ve toyed around with roster previews, and found where some of the stresses and choke points might be for the Giants in trying to find playing time for everybody in 2025. But now the real work of There R Giants’ offseason begins: Depth Charts! Over the next month or so, I’ll dig in position by position, and try to put a prospect grade on every player in the organization — or close to it. I did get to see just about everybody who played domestically in person this year — and a lot of the Dominican guys on video as well — so I think I’m as prepared to undertake this project as anybody who isn’t actually employed by the San Francisco Giants. If you want real depth in your depth charts, There R Giants is the place to be!
(Hey, speaking of which, I have the perfect Christmas gift for the Giants’ fan in your life!)
I’m going to start this year with the shortstop position for a variety of reasons. First, I’ve had multiple readers request greater evaluation of these guys specifically during the Roster Previews and in recent mailbags. And I promise you all, we WILL talk defensive ability today. This is also just a crucial position on the diamond — and one that Buster Posey has made clear is an organizational priority. I agreed fully with Dave Flemming’s assessment that the lack of quality depth at the critical center field and shortstop positions has been a real organizational failure that has been going on for far too long now (thank God for Brandon Crawford!). And, with the page fully turned on viewing Marco Luciano as the heir apparent to the position, it’s time to really take stock of what the internal options are going forward.
And lastly, I’m tackling shortstop first because I still have the memory of having to get up in the middle of the night in a hotel in Salzburg and re-write a scheduled shortstop post the night news broke that they had signed Carlos Correa. Hopefully, if I can rush this one out first, they can hold off on signing Willy Adames or Ha Seong Kim until a little later in the winter meetings!
[EDITOR’S NOTE, Timestamp 5:32 EST, 12/7/24: This portion of the plan did not work out so well, but we’re not complaining!]
And with that, we’re off. Let’s dive in and see exactly what kind of depth we have at The Six!
