Just as the weekend was starting up, I was sitting on a Zoom call with Baseball America correspondent, Jesús Cano, talking a little Arizona Complex League (you’ll hear that conversation in full in this week’s edition of the pod). Cano was getting ready to head over to Papago Park for the Friday night game and we excitedly talked about Argenis Cayama — a player he had profiled earlier in the summer. As we talked about the impressive year he’s been putting together and the scouting buzz he’s generating, at one point I stopped and joked the we were probably jinxing him with all the praise we were throwing his way. “He’ll probably go out tonight and have the worst start of his career,” I joshed, trying my level best to put a little reverse-jinx sentiment out into the universe. Never fear, the 18-year-old Venezuelan righty appears to be jinx proof. Hours after he was named the ACL’s Pitcher of the Month, Cayama went out and did what he increasingly does: limit runs and rack up Ks.
There have been a lot of positive development stories on the Giants’ farm this year, but don’t lose sight of the strides that Cayama is making. This is a young man that could be the top pitching prospect in this system at some point in the future — and that future might be coming faster than we think.
HITTER of the WEEKEND: Zander Darby (SJ), 4 for 8, 2 3b, 5 RBI, 1 SB
PITCHER of the WEEKEND: Argenis Cayama (ACLG), 5.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K
Alright, let’s get on our toes and look alive. It’s time for a Big Monday edition of the Minor Lines.
