Big swings from Luciano, Toribio; Concerns over Corry highlight night

Here at There R Giants, we know how to tip our caps with the best of them — even when we’re tipping them at a Dodger. If we must, we must: well done, Zach McKinstry!

But, hey! It’s not like our guys didn’t do anything worth cheering on the night! Check out Abdiel Layer taking extra bases away with the diving grab and throw from his knees:

Before we get to today’s games, there were a few more transactions to report last night (ah yes, the old game: I publish a week’s worth of transactions on the off day, hours later the Giants report a rash more for the coming series):

Patrick Ruotolo: Richmond → Sacramento
Jeremy Walker: San Jose (rehab) → Sacramento
Daniel Tillo: Assigned → Sacramento
Matt Frisbee: XST → Richmond
Jairo Pomares: Eugene → Developmental List
Evan Gates: San Jose → Eugene
Ian Villers: San Jose → IL

Ruotolo finally gets his well-deserved call up to Triple A — a topic I mentioned the other night. In his third go at Double A, he was overwhelming the opposition so far, striking out seven of the nine batters he faced. Walker gets boosted to Sacramento after just one rehab outing in San Jose, and the newly signed Tillo goes with him. Frisbee rejoins Richmond’s roster, and should get his first outing of the year soon.

The most eye-opening of these transactions is, no doubt, Pomares’ move off of the active roster. This appears to be connected to the Emeralds’ crossing the border into Canada for this week’s series. Cuban refugees must wait through a long and complicated visa process with the US government before they are able to sign with MLB teams, but they do not go through the same process with the Canadian government at that time. Consequently, getting them Visas into Canadian cities to play can be a tricky process. He’ll sit out the week vs. the Canadians. Fortunately, Eugene is only scheduled to go north of the border three times this year, with the next series not coming until mid-June and the final one coming at the end of the year.

To the lines…

HITTER of the Night: Luis Toribio (Eug), 2 for 4, HR (2), 3b, 3 RBI
PITCHER of the Night: Eric Silva (SJ), 2.2 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K, 1 HR

Continuing the trend at the big league level, it was a tough day for pitching throughout the system. There was a disturbing turn of events in Eugene, and perhaps a lost opportunity in Sacramento, but at least San Jose offered up a balm for the pitching woes. There were bombs, there were wings, there were diving plays, and, of course, there was weather. Let’s check out the night’s events!
