Regrets! I have a few! And right now, a big one is that I somehow didn’t connect Dylan Cumming with his star turn in one of the great college media productions of recent years, Liberty University Media’s amazing uniform reveal that went massively viral (and even got a feature story in the NY Times) back in 2022. I may never get over my shame at not asking Cumming about this — or potentially getting him to reenact it — in our recent video interview. I hang my head…
But our real topic for today is redemption, so perhaps I can take solace in the idea that no misstep is forever. Baseball America issued their monthly Top 100 update last week, and with Kyle Harrison passed on from prospectdom, the Giants are left with just two players on the list at this point (one of whom has plunged 67 places from his high point two years ago, but that’s a topic for another time). Part of the reason for the Giants’ continued poor showings on these lists is the ill fortune that has beset the first two 1st round picks of the Farhan Zaidi era, Hunter Bishop and Will Bednar, both of whom have lost multiple seasons of development to injury and discomfort.
But in 2024, both appear to be fully healthy, and both are still showing the kind of tools and skillsets that made them consensus top picks at the end of their college careers. There’s no telling where these stories go from here, but you can’t help but feel happy for these young athletes finally getting to go out and compete and play the game they love again.
HITTER of the WEEKEND: Hunter Bishop (Sac) 6 for 12, HR (4), 2 2b, 2 BB, 2R, 4 RBI
PITCHER of the WEEKEND: Will Bednar (Eug), 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K
Now that’s a Power Duo! Hopefully, we’ll enjoy this combination up here a few more times this year….and in seasons to come.
