You know, sometimes there’s so much that I want to talk about that I lose the thread of my narrative and totally forget things I wanted to talk about. But, yesterday, I absolutely wanted to point out that Onil Perez started the first game of his career at a defensive position other than catcher! The Emeralds had just nine position players available to them for the game (due to some day-to-day owies), which gave Manager Jeremiah Knackstedt something of a jigsaw puzzle to work. There were three outfielders available, counting utilityman Quinn McDaniel, but McDaniel was also one of only two healthy players with any experience in the middle infield.
The end result of all the puzzling was that, after 226 career games spent only behind the plate (or at DH), Perez made his debut in the outfield on Wednesday night! And, of course, where does the first ball of the game get put in play? Right to the new guy of course!
Nice job Onil! Just a couple batters later, he got to show off his arm from the corner!
But here I am burying the lede again, when, of course the story last night wasn’t any of that — it was Bryce Eldridge putting on a prodigious power display, falling not that far short of a three homer night! That’s a pretty good way to head into the weekend!
HITTER of the NIGHT: Bryce Eldridge (Eug), 2 for 5, 2 HR (16), 2 R, 4 RBI
PITCHER of the NIGHT: Cesar Perdomo (Eug), 4.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 4 K
Alright, let’s see if we can get a handle on the night’s events and get to the lines.
