The rehab chickens are coming home to roost this week. We’ve seen Turner Hill return to Richmond (sadly to replace a departing Carter Howell), Wade Meckler return to Sacramento. And last night, one of the longer-awaited returns — really going back more than a year — Maui Ahuna returned to San Jose and took the field as a shortstop. He didn’t quite get in a full game on the defensive side — we still haven’t seen that happen yet in his return from Tommy John. But he got on the field in a full-season level and put a danged glove on his left hand. It had to feel pretty good! To celebrate, he got a little froggy legged and stole a couple of bags. That’s a nice celebration ritual!
With Ahuna joining a pretty long roster of position players, a host of questions come with him: what will Walker Martin be doing when Ahuna is playing short? How will they fit now the eight infielders and four outfielders into regular duty? What happens when Jose Ortíz is ready to return as well? These all fit into the proverbial “good problems to have” bucket. For now, it’s just good to see these guys back on the field!

Let’s head to the Lines. There are great achievements to be found, but, remember, sometimes the greatest victory is merely showing up to play and getting your uni dirty.
