Today marks one of the toughest headline decisions in There R Giants’ history! In the early afternoon, top prospect Bryce Eldridge provided a scintillating moment with the first walk-off home run of his professional career. Some nine hours later, Jean Carlos Sio, my “helium” prospect in the system in the most recent rankings, went cycling in Inland Empire. That was the first cycle for a San Jose player since Jalen Miller and Gio Brusa had their historic bi-cycle in Lancaster back on April 11, 2018. And, while I haven’t been able to verify this absolutely, I think that might be the last cycle in the Giants’ organization. I do know that no Richmond player has ever hit for the cycle, and that the only cycle in Sacramento River Cats’ history came from Adam Duvall back in 2015. The last San Francisco cycle I’m pretty sure was Pablo Sandoval’s, in 2011.
Gee, it kinda seems like Sio should get top billing, given the historic nature of his achievement. On the other hand, there’s that really cool photo of Bryce — and I haven’t yet found a really cool photo of Sio from last night. [Shrug]. I’ll split the difference. Bryce gets the headline; Sio has the coveted “Hitter of the Night” honor.
HITTER of the NIGHT: Jean Carlos Sio (SJ), 4 for 6, HR, 3b, 2b, 3 R, 3 RBI
PITCHER of the NIGHT: Greg Farone (Eug), 5.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 K
As an aside on the Miller/Brusa bi-cycle, memorabilia from that game was sent to the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown. Trey Wilson, the Richmond Director of Communications, always arranges a trip to the Hall of Fame when Richmond takes road trips up to Binghamton, and so it was that Miller and Brusa got to stand in the museum and see a small display on their own achievement — which has to be just an indescribably cool moment for those young men to have lived through. You can leave your mark on this game in a lot of different ways!
