There’s no real “super squad” in the Giants’ farm system this year — nobody who is setting up as “must see TV” for the coming year. Partially that is because the system itself is a little down, following a huge wave of graduations to the top level. Partially, it’s because the true star in the system is opening up the year in rehab mode. And, partially, it’s because of the way the talent is dispersed around the organization. Of the top eight prospects on There R Giants’ Top 50, only two are opening the season in the same place — #6 and 7 prospects, Jhonny Level and Rayner Arias, who both will remain in extended spring camp, presumably starting up their years when the ACL begins.
That has had something of a leveling effect on the system. No team is running away with the attention, but every team has something interesting going on.
Eugene’s roster isn’t immune to that overall democratization, but they can claim one of the more interesting units in the organization in their collection of outfielders. The group contains three different members of my Top 20, who will likely be lining up together on most nights: James Tibbs III, Bo Davidson, and Jonah Cox. Only Sacramento’s pitching staff (which has five of the top 12 prospects in the system) can really match up to that group — and it could have been even more impressive if young Lisbel Diaz had convinced his bosses to give him the bump. Maybe soon!
For now, this trio will attract most of the excitement in the Pacific Northwest this spring.
