The great thing about the annual guessing game that is Rule 5 protections is not that we’re ever exactly right — oh, no! that’ll never happen — but that it leads at last to clarity. We have the answers in clear and definitive form.

With four open spots on their 40-man roster, the Giants prioritized pitching depth this year, adding LHP Erik Miller, RHP Kai-Wei Teng, and RHP Trevor McDonald to their 40-man roster, while making the tough decision to hold off on a couple of top position prospects from lower down.

As President of Baseball Operations Farhan Zaidi described the decisions, they really came down to the need for arms in Costco-like bulk to weather the demands of a six-month season and find a way to cover some 1,450 or more innings.
