Scouting Director Michael Holmes pushed back at the notion that the Giants are now the “two-way organization,” however, telling reporters on a post-draft zoom call “we like baseball players, first and foremost. Bryce is a tremendous baseball player.”
Holmes noted that the Giants have a long history with Eldridge, having watched him at his Northern Virginia high school for three years, and following him on summer showcase circuits leading up to his triumphant hitting performance for Team USA in last summer’s World Cup tournament. Eldridge ended up with MVP honors for the Gold Medal winning Team USA, hitting three homers and driving in several clutch runs, in addition to closing out games as a pitcher, “so you’re just talking about an extreme ultimate competitor, a proven winner on the field. I think that [competitiveness], first and foremost, will allow him to excel in whatever he wants to do.”
