Have You Noticed That Trevor McDonald is a Very Fine Pitcher Having a Very Fine Season?
SF Giants Minor Lines, July 28, 2022
Silently, stealthily, the injury gremlins appear to be devouring all of the Giants finest prospects. Marco Luciano, of course, hasn’t played since June 3rd. Will Bednar last took the mound on June 12. Will Wilson last suited up on June 22, and has played just 17 games since April 30. Ryan Murphy has pitched just nine times all year.
Two more recent additions to this ongoing plague have been outfielders Hunter Bishop and Heliot Ramos. Back on July 17, Bishop was pinch hit for in the 5th inning of a 4-3 game, and hasn’t been heard from since. In the top of the that inning, he jogged over and cleanly fielded a ground single and tossed it back it, showing no particular signs of discomfort. But, clearly, discomfort was lurking somewhere as the gremlins got their teeth in him. Ramos has now missed four straight games. In his last game, Saturday night, he played the entire game, striking out for the final out of the night, but on his last two swings of that at bat, he did appear to be hopping around and limping in some discomfort — in his back leg or knee.
Possibly this is all good news for those of you who nervously clutch your prospects around trade time. It’s hard for teams to say “yes” to deals on players they can’t scout! All I can say is, for god’s sake, somebody drape Kyle Harrison in bubble wrap!
On the bright side, we have new incoming:
The Giants officially announced the signing of their top 17 picks yesterday afternoon. I’ll look at the numbers this weekend, but I’m not sure if there’s money left for any of the final three players or not. Though they did get some underslot money from top pick Reggie Crawford and others, most of that went to 2nd round pick Carson Whisenhunt, who signed for about $800,000 overslot. Whisenhunt has been pitching on Cape Cod this summer, so he might be heated up and ready to hop right into game action quickly. Crawford, who is still recovering from Tommy John surgery, is not scheduled to pitch this summer but we should see him hit some. The other pitchers are likely to get built back up slowly, as we saw with last year’s class.
New talent!
HITTER of the Night: Grant McCray (SJ), 2 for 4, BB, 2 K, SB (28)
PITCHER of the Night: Trevor McDonald (SJ), 5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K
I’m on the verge of renaming the “Hitter of the Night” the “Grant McCray Memorial Hitter of the Night Honor.”
If you’ve come looking for victories, I’m afraid you’ve come to the wrong place. Apparently, all of the victories needed to be sacrificed to the baseball gods to get the Giants off the schneid last night. The farm system had a dreadful 2-7 record on the day, and one of the wins came in a rookie league intramural. Ouch! Let’s plunge into the lines anyway…
