Here Comes Bryce Eldridge! (Plus High Times in Eugene and Richmond)
SF Giants Minor Lines, May 1 - 3, 2026
The two winningest teams in the minor leagues reside on the Giants’ farm. Both Richmond and Eugene reached the 20-win mark on Saturday night, making them the first clubs below the Triple-A level to do so this year. Not surprisingly, they are also the only two teams in the minors with a win percentage over .700 — and it’s a lot over in both cases. Richmond, which lost on Sunday, ceding title of the best record in the minors to its little brother, currently sits on a .769 winning percentage (20-6), while the 21-6 Eugene club, which finished off yet another five-win week on Sunday, sit at an astounding .778!
On top of which, both Josuar Gonzalez and Luis Hernandez made their domestic debuts this weekend, and Hernandez made his very first professional hit a pretty big one!
Man, things are getting HOT around here!
Of course, the whole point of having a strong, well-functioning farm system is to improve the fate of the top club — and preferably, a little sooner than next decade. Which is why the top story of the weekend involved a couple of guys who weren’t on the field at all come Sunday.
Susan Slusser’s breaking news that Bryce Eldridge and Jesús Rodriguez are being called up for tonight’s series opener against the Padres (along with Trevor McDonald, who will presumably either start tonight or be a major part of the pitching plans in some way) brings us to the first really pivotal moment for the farm this year. It’s a long-expected fork in the road, but a crucial one nonetheless. Strong records and outstanding performances at lower levels are welcome signs of a system that appears to be on the rise, but this is going to be the first real acid test of the farm’s ability to lend aid and depth to a major league team whose year is really starting to spin out of control.
A bit of the future is here — an important bit! — and hopefully, it’s here to help.
