Player development is all about absorbing lessons, adjusting, and moving on. Last night we saw players on all points of that spectrum. Some were on the learning end of tough lessons. Some were showing how well they’d adjusted to previous ones. And some players were just moving on!
Take Drew Cavanaugh, who probably should just live with a packed suitcase at this point. Just one day after finally making his High-A debut, the 2023 17th rounder from Florida Southern was once again sent packing, as the continual catcher shuffle changed needs once again. On Monday, Zach Morgan was sent up to Sacramento to help out with their catcher situation, as both Max Stassi (IL) and Sam Huff (creaky back) were out. Hardly had Morgan arrived when Logan Porter was needed in Colorado, and suddenly Zach was a one-man catching unit, before he’d ever played his first game in Triple-A. Enter Cavanaugh, who should just have a timeshare unit in Sacramento by this point.
It’s a confusing sequence of events, which is playing havoc with Richmond’s social media group — Morgan was the model for this weekend’s specialty uniform!
Anyway, to the lessons….er…the lines.
HITTER of the NIGHT: Jesus Alexander (ACLG), 4 for 4, 5 RBI, 2b, BB, 1 R
PITCHER of the NIGHT: Shane Rademacher (Eug), 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 0 BB, 4 K
I always like to start with defense, and I got to watch another strong showing with the glove last night from Sabin Ceballos. One thing about absorbing lessons, it helps when you have another strong element of your game to lean on. Ceballos has had a tough go of it with the bat so far this year, but he has consistently been flashing the leather.
