As we head into June, I’m looking forward to getting something like some nice early summer weather. And while that would certainly appear to have been the case for the west coast affiliates last night (in Washington they were already started to talk about the heat), the baseball I was watching was wet, cold, blustery, and bedraggled. And, of course, I got to skip out on the recent road trip to upstate New York, which was all those things turned up to 11. A Squirrel I chatted with before the game said the team hadn’t seen the sun in three weeks — a statement that could be taken both literally and metaphorically.

It’s always something to remember when looking at stat sheets and B-Ref pages, performance always has to be contextualized by environments, and not all environments are the same. When you’re playing for weeks at a time in a wet, steady drizzle, a lot of the real development work is going on before games, under stadiums, in tunnels. As Manager Dennis Pelfrey reminded me last night, development happens in the work and preparation that is done before the crowds arrive and the lights go on, Show Time is just when the fruits of the labor are displayed. But, is it too much to ask to display some of it in a warm (not hot!), mildly temperate environment with some sunshine?

HITTER of the NIGHT: Bo Davidson (Eug), 2 for 5, 3b, 1 R, 3 RBI
PITCHER of the NIGHT: Josh Bostick (Eug),
5.0 IP, 1 H, 3 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 9 K

Alright, neither rain nor snow nor sleet nor hail shall keep Minor Lines from its appointed rounds. Let’s suit up take the field!
