Had I been checking my email yesterday while waiting for my interview subject to arrive, rather than chatting with the groundskeepers about the new turf at CarMax Park, I would have been able to chat with Ryan Murphy about his upcoming assignment to the Arizona Fall League. Alas, we didn’t get into that topic during our very pleasant chat (which you will surely be hearing sometime soon — tease).

That is just my way of introducing the fact that the AFL rosters were finally announced yesterday (I feel like this is the second straight year that they haven’t been released until the final week of the minor league season). Unlike last year, when Bryce Eldridge was the star attraction of the Scottsdale Scorpions, the Giants’ representatives aren’t going to be the center of attention on this roster (which includes both Baseball America’s #2 prospect in baseball, Kevin McGonigle, and their #10 prospect in baseball, Sebastian Walcott).

But that doesn’t mean there aren’t some interesting players in this group — quite literally! Look, here’s one of the Giants’ players listed in an article titled “12 Interesting Players to Watch in the Arizona Fall League” (for those of you without BA subscriptions, Parks Harber is the answer to your question). As for the rest of the group, the theme for this year is “TJ!”

  • LHP Ricardo Estrada

  • RHP Spencer Miles

  • RHP Ryan Murphy

  • LHP Juan Sanchez

  • RHP Jose T. Perez

  • INF Maui Ahuna

  • INF Parks Harber

  • INF Walker Martin

There’s a lot of rehab and recovery going on there! Estrada is the only pitcher that I don’t know to have had surgery in the recent past — and he’s had some big gaps in his record. This isn’t the first year that the Giants have sent pitchers to the AFL who threw no innings on the season — they did the same with Marques Johnson just last year. But this could well be the fewest collective innings thrown by a group of pitchers headed to the AFL. Perez threw the second most innings this year in this group — and he started the year in the Dominican Summer League, and hadn’t pitched in four years before that. He and Estrada both spent all of 2021-2024 in the Giants’ Dominican facility. It’s been a pretty interesting season for big advances!
