Hope everybody enjoyed Jackie Robinson Day! One of the greatest days on the baseball calendar in celebration of the greatest Dodger there ever was — and one of the very greatest ballplayers in any uniform. Near the end of her life, my aunt Mimi recalled with a mixture of pride and awe that she and Jack were friends “on a first name basis” on the campus of UCLA so many decades before, and I believe she counted it as one of the great joys of her life that she could say so.
That’s the kind of shadow that Robinson cast over all who encountered him and the world through which he strode. It’s a great weekend to remember his sacrifices, his mortifications, his righteous anger, and his victories — and, of course, to remember how far short of his promise and dreams for the world we still fall.
So let’s honor one of the all time greatest competitors in our own, very minor way here at There R Giants by checking in on the youngsters who still strive, still fall, and still get up to strive some more.
HITTER of the WEEKEND: Logan Wyatt (Eug), 4 for 10, 2 HR (2), 2 2b (2), 6 RBI, BB
PITCHER of the WEEKEND: Jack Choate (SJ), 3.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 6 K
It’s a Big Monday edition, where we trying to capture the big picture from weekend. Hopefully, all of my points are as on target as an Ismael Munguia assist to the plate!
