Of the various low-level breakout arms this year, I’m starting to feel like Luis de la Torre is the one who is still being slept on a bit. Argenis Cayama keeps getting the top prospect plaudits, and both Keyner Martinez and Jacob Bresnahan have started zooming up the charts.
De la Torre is the one who is still getting a lot of “yeah…but(s)” when I talk with scouts. Yeah, it’s exciting stuff, but there’s no real projection there, as he’s really jacked out at this point. Yeah, he’s left-handed, but I’m not sure he’s really a starter. I’m wanting to hear plain ol’ Yeaaaaaaahs, and I keep getting yeah, buts.
But when de la Torre takes the mound, the only but[t]s about his performance are the ones he’s kicking! And he just keeps on kicking them. Promotion to the Cal League has done nothing to slow this roll. And he’s starting to make me question seriously how much separation I should leave between him and some other upper level left-handed arms, like Bresnahan and even Joe Whitman. What if de la Torre is actually the best left-handed pitching prospect in this system? Is it true? I don’t know….but I’m starting to think that it’s not a crazy question to ask.
