Later on in today’s post, I shared some memories of Tyler Fitzgerald, during what was probably the darkest and most difficult period of his development. Probably my mind was spurred by Fitzgerald’s outstanding game in San Francisco yesterday, where he put his special gifts to use, giving the Giants a quality they’ve been lacking this year — the stolen base!
But his great day is also a reminder that this game is hard and the processes that lead to success can often be slow and frustrating. As Dennis Pelfrey likes to say, failure is a better teacher than success — though, like many great teachers, they’re best appreciated in retrospect. Actually experiencing the lessons is a painful process, and it takes a special type of person to experience grueling and publicly humiliating failures and glean the lessons of improvement and the path to success from within them.
Fitzgerald — like many others who play this game — is certainly a special type of person. Congratulations, Tyler! And thanks for the win!
