Re-Ranking the Top 50

We’ve watched nearly three months of baseball since the There R Giants Top 50 dropped this winter — four counting spring training. And since, to be honest, that list that I finished publishing in March was actually compiled way back in November, the amount of new information is far beyond just the 2022 half-season of data. So it’s time for a re-fresh. There’s going to be lots of movement here, but I’m pretty happy with where I’ve landed.

I was going to go just 30 deep with this mid-season re-ranking, but I found I just couldn’t help myself, as there were so many names I wanted to get on the list. As such, don’t pay too much attention to the order of the back half, there’s a huge tier that all mashes together after about #20.

Let’s go in reverse order, starting with….

First Five Off the List (in alphbetical order):

  • Tyler Fitzgerald

  • Mikell Manzano

  • Mauricio Pierre

  • Carson Ragsdale

  • Luis Toribio

A mix of old, young and injured. Fitzgerald offers power and middle infield defense, but has struck out a concerning amount in his pro career. That’s been true of Toribio as well. Though he’s suddenly tapping into his raw power, it’s been in an all or nothing manner. If he can integrate the approach and the power, there may still be an interesting profile there. Ragsdale had a promising first year, but thoracic outlet surgery doesn’t have a sterling track record of success. Manzano and Pierre are two projectibility youngsters in the ACL whom I’m monitoring. The former needs more velo and the latter more power, but both are intriguing.
