San Jose Becomes Fourth SF Affiliate to Make Playoffs!

Definitely taking the path less trod, San Jose became the fourth Giants’ affiliate to qualify for its league’s playoffs last night! Learning how to win is part of the development process, too, so a chance to take four flags in six leagues is a great development opportunity.

But before we get to that, appropriately for Labor Day week, we have a bombshell labor story going on the minor league world:

BREAKING: More than 50 percent of minor leaguers have signed cards backing a union, MLBPA officials say. The Players Association has formally asked MLB for voluntary recognition, sending a letter to the commissioner’s office this morning:
theathletic.comMLBPA has majority support for minor league unionIn just a week-and-a-half’s time, more than 50 percent of minor leaguers have returned signed union authorization cards, Major League Baseball Players Association officials told The Athletic. Now, with that majority’s support, the MLBPA has taken another significant step: it has asked MLB...

Stunningly, barely a week after news broke that the MLBPA would be sending out union authorization cards to all domestic minor league players, they have already received far more than the 30% approval benchmark necessary to call for a vote for creating a minor league union. In fact, they’ve surpassed the 50% mark necessary for certification. This is a colossal story, with the tireless advocacy work of Garrett Broshuis and Advocates for Minor Leaguers suddenly backed by the resources and power of the MLBPA.

Look for much more on this story in this week’s There R Giants podcast, coming later on today!

On a smaller, and more parochial scale, the Giants are still firming up those playoff rosters with even more bodies on the move.

Look at 19-year-old Mikell Manzano move! A There R Giants’ fave! And, of course, Damon Dues’ insane on base skills will be very helpful to a Eugene squad that will be missing Jairo Pomares and Carter Williams this week. In Richmond, the IL carousel continues, as the ill-fated Sean Roby got parked in time out for the third time in the last two months. Poor Sean just can’t stay on the field lately. These three stints are essentially costing him his entire second half. Replacing Roby on the roster is Diego Rincones, who comes off his most recent IL stint for a quad strain. In addition, RHP Tanner Andrews moved up from Eugene.

Let’s get to the lines…

HITTER of the Night: Hunter Bishop (Eug), 4 for 5, 2 R, 2 RBI, 3 SB (20)
PITCHER of the Night: Wie-Chieh Huang (Sac),
5.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K
