When you walk into San Jose’s Excite Ballpark, you are confronted with that larger than life memory of the legends of recent Giants’ baseball: Cain, Posey, Lincecum, Bumgarner. They’re all there, in peach fuzz and short hair, the seed of dynastic glory in its A-ball incarnation. And, preparing to write this preview, there’s simply no way for me to avoid thinking about the question — will one of those banners hang with Bryce Eldridge’s teenaged visage one day?
The Giants’ farm system is in a better place today than we’ve seen it for many years. Crucial members of the major league club have bubbled up from the farm in the last year, and the Triple-A Sacramento team arguably has more legitimate talent this year than in any previous year in its time as a San Francisco affiliate. And yet, despite an enticing flow of talent to the upper minors, the Low-A squad is going to once again take its place as appointment viewing this year, and the primary (though hardly the sole) reason for that stands 6 feet 7 inches and clubs baseballs with tremendous force!
Let’s face it….it ain’t just chicks, Mr. Maddux. We ALL dig the long ball!
