There are two great things about today’s post! First, I have no esoteric Fangraphs’ studies to throw at you! And second, we got a couple of really impressive performances from rookie pitchers this year — so much so that we have some people whose FV is moving up in today’s post. So that’s fun!
Those two elements are actually connected. It’s human nature to start digging for context only when the surface isn’t telling a story we like. While parsing through the Giants’ rookie hitters is an exercise in seeking out good signs for the future — digging into the underlying numbers — in the main, the Giants’ rookie pitchers were successful enough that it becomes pretty simple to tell a laudatory tale. There’s an exception to that, which we’ll get to, but, by and large, today’s post comes bearing good news.
As an added treat, since there were only three pitchers who eclipsed prospect status on this year’s team, this post shouldn’t challenge the Tolstoyesque word count of Monday’s opus. All of which should make for a short and sweet There R Giants’ post. Let’s get to it…
(Yes, indeed, that is Ryan Walker striking out future teammate Shohei Ohtani. Be a fun thing for them to reminisce over in spring camp).
