We’re into the There R Giants Top 50. Over the winter months, I’ll write a post on each of the fifty players in my rankings, leading us back to the much-needed spring. Our list of previously covered players is getting a little long, so from here on out I’m moving the links for the full list down the bottom of the post.
There’s probably not another player in professional baseball who has as much cause to regret the lost 2020 minor league season as Seth Corry. Nobody finished the 2019 season on such a high note — just seven runs total allowed over a 12 start run that stretched out 63.2 innings. And the best part? An 86 K to 16 BB ratio that suggested that the young pitcher who had walked 54 batters over his first 82 professional innings had vanished into his crysalis, and a mature, budding ace had emerged from the pupa.
And then…the mother of all cliffhangers came. From the winter of 2020 through the spring of 2021 the question hung over Giants prospect sites like this one: will Corry pick up where he left off? Everybody imagined what Corry’s “next step” might look like — one imagines even Corry himself could have been caught up in the question as he worked on his game throughout the pandemic pause. The question lingered and lingered, until finally the moment came to learn the answer at last.
That answer turned into a long, slow-motion sidewards skid which mixed ridiculously good and insanely bad elements in almost equal measure. The season snowballed, paused, returned to glory….and then ended in a coda that confused matters even more.
Now as we await yet another new beginning, different questions hover over Corry and his path. Is there a fix for the command troubles that have plagued much of his career? What would his potential look like, if so? Why didn’t the Giants protect him for the Rule 5 draft? Is there a real chance they could lose him? And, I suppose, the big one: can the Jekyll be separated from the Hyde, or will they forever be tied together, fighting for ultimate control of Corry’s fate?
