When the Baseball Gods close a door to one player, somewhere they open a window to another — often to multiple others! Casey Schmitt’s oblique gave an unexpected second chance to David Villar, who was returned to the 40-man and to the major league roster. But the dominoes continued to fall beyond Villar, bringing Victor Bericoto a long-desired promotion to Sacramento. Bericoto was part of Sacramento’s roster for a single day in the first week of their season, but at that point, he was just keeping a seat warm for Villar, who was in the process of clearing waivers and getting outrighted. Once Villar reported, Bericoto continued to the East Coast without making an appearance, and joined Richmond for their season opener. But now he’s returned and should have opportunities to play, taking Villar’s spot at 1b on most days I would imagine.
Villar and Bericoto are connected by more than just transactional logic — they are also two players who have really jumped out to good starts at the start of the year, making their case to be the first players promoted with the force of their play. That’s the way baseball logic tends to work — keep producing on the field, and opportunities will find you eventually.
A heart-felt congratulations to both David and Victor, two guys who have worked hard to get to this moment. Make the most of it, men!
HITTER of the WEEKEND: Victor Bericoto (Rich/Sac), 4 for 8, HR, 3 R, 3 RBI, BB, Promotion!
PITCHER of the WEEKEND: Carson Whisenhunt (Sac), 6.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 9 K
That, I believe, is my first ever “Hitter of the Weekend” who performed his award-winning work in two different leagues on two different coasts over the course of three days. Congrats on a history-making performance, Victor!
Alright, we have lots of ground to cover here today. Perhaps, I should call in Carter Howell to lend me a hand.
