A little question for everybody — do people like these stats updates after the off day? Is it something you find useful? I do, personally, but just want to take the temperature of the crowd to make sure I’m providing something of use. Is there a tweak or something else entirely you’d like to see? Please let me know — I’m happy to provide!
As with last week, we’ll take a look at the rookie ball games before getting to the stats, leader boards, and transactions wire.
Rookie League Games
ACL Giants Black won @ ACL White Sox 11-6 (10 inn)
ACL Giants Orange lost to ACL Brewers 7-0 (7 inn)
The Giants’ ACL pitching staffs got cla-bobber-tated in the desert last night, pouring runs out like it was an open bar. Right-handers Brayan Palencia and Miguel Mora had strong opening games, but both were roughed up in last night’s outings.
However, Team Black fought back from their big 6-0 deficit, hanging yet another win on their league leading total. At 9-1, they currently have the circuit’s best record, and it’s been earned by scoring the most runs — an average of 7.5 per game. Last night they got a bit of help. Their six run rally in the 6th that brought them back to tie the game was accomplished with the help of four different run scoring wild pitches from the same White Sox’ pitcher. Now, that’s a rough night at the office!
Anthony Rodriguez punctuated their huge five-run 10th inning, however, with his fourth home run — as we will see later, that leads the ACL in homers, breaking a tie with his erstwhile teammate Jairo Pomares. Rodriguez had a hit and a run scored in both of Giants Black’s rallies. Rodriguez is still striking out a good bit, but he’s doing everything else he needs to be doing in his repeat of the circuit. He’s still just 19, and the move to shortstop certainly is a positive sign.
Hard throwing Willian Suarez had one of the best outings of his career, striking out 7 over three innings of relief, while allowing just two hits and no runs.
DSL Giants Black beat DSL Mets1, 2-1 (7 inn)
DSL Giants Orange lost @ DSL Mariners, 7-6 (8 inn)
A triple from right fielder Randy Arrieta — just the second hit of the year for the 18-year-old — started a two run rally that got help from a two-out error and a wild pitch. Those two runs and a lot of stout pitching helped the Black take a win despite finishing the day with just two hits. Right-hander Mauricio Estrella had his best outing of the year, going a season high 5.0 innings and surrendering a season low one run. The 18-year-old has struck out 16 batters in 13.1 IP in his inaugural season and has a 3.38 ERA. Luis Yepez, a 20-year-old right-hander who posted a 7.58 ERA last year, has yet to allow a run in his first five games of the season. He picked up his first save by taking down the final four outs of the game.
Over at Giants Orange’s game, Lazaro Morales, Oswaldo Ladera, and Estanlin Cassiani each had two hits, helping the team jump out to a 5-1 lead. The 19-year-old Ladera had a particularly good game, picking up his second extra-base hit of the season (a double) and stealing two bags. The Orange pitching was slightly less stout than Black’s, letting a 6-2 lead slip away in the Mariners’ penultimate at bat, and losing the game in extra innings. However, right-hander Samir Chires had an excellent game, striking out six of the eight batters he faced. Chires had a 3.33 ERA last season, but struck out just 4.00 batter per 9 innings.
I need to apologize for overlooking a second DSL Orange game on Saturday! In addition to losing a previously suspended game, they won a regularly scheduled game as well. And while I’d be happy enough to pretend that such a thing had never happened, secure in the knowledge that most of you wouldn’t notice the oversight, it so happens that Team Orange’s victory also saw the best performance of the young season.
Jediael Maduro went 4 for 4 with his 2nd home run in the team’s 8-7 walk-off victory (being the DSL, the walk-off itself was composed of a wild pitch that scored the tying run combined with a throwing error from the catcher that brought in the winning run. Poetry). The 18-year-old Maduro is repeating the league and playing strictly 1b — kinda two strikes in the DSL environment for prospects — but he sure is tanking the ball around so far! Promise I won’t miss another star performance, Jediael! (Sadly, he went 0 for 4 in yesterday’s game, so I couldn’t rave about him for that game and just forget about Saturday’s omission).
To help with the visual, here’s a young Jediael.
Sacramento River Cats: 27-39, 4th Place (10.5 GB)
-57 Run Differential
Sacramento keeps piping talent into San Francisco, but what’s left behind is having a dismal summer, as the River Cats are just 9-21 over past 30 games.

TRANSACTIONS
C Max Wright re-assigned from San Jose

C Ronaldo Flores re-assigned to San Jose
RHP Ty Weber re-assigned from Sacramento
Other transactions will be coming before today’s game begins as well. Jairo Pomares and Carter Williams should both be returning for the home series.
The Giants spasmodic movement of their various organizational catchers is a source of perpetual mystery to me. They seem to be like some deviant version of “Speed,” where none of them can be in the same place for more than 10 days without exploding, and must be shuffled around randomly to prevent catastrophe. It really is astonishing to behold.
San Jose Giants: 37-26, 2nd Place (2.0 GB)
+70 Run Differential
The Giants have three games left in the 1st half to make up a two game deficit. Time for a miracle.

Six of the top eight performers in the Giants’ lineup (per wRC+) are 24 years old or older, and two have played in Double A. There are some in Low A circles who consider such things a tad bit unsporting.

Seems like it’s time to check in on the rookies. Wow, that Pomares guy is off to some kind of start, eh? The Giants boast the two top home run hitters in the league in Pomares and Anthony Rodriguez, while their pitching staff is dominating the league in strikeouts and IP — I found the starting pitchers the Giants are pushing!
Dominican Summer League
Giants Black: 5-7, T-7th Place (4.0 GB), -12 Run Differential
Giants Orange, 5-7, T-7th Place (4.0 GB), -11 Run Differential

Rookie League rosters are a little unwieldy! Also, pretty hard to get on the leader boards in a league with nearly 50 teams, so congratulations to Jediael Maduro and Cesar Perdomo: for standing out in a crowd!

Goodness, that TBD fella is getting in a lot of work today! The one known entity is a good one though, as Kyle Harrison takes the hill in Richmond — where every game matters this week! That’s true for at least two more days in San Jose, while Eugene has a few more days to bask in the glow of their playoff berth.
Look for this week’s podcast episode, featuring The Athletic’s Melissa Lockard, later today as well as another post, detailing my hopes for every member of the There R Giants’ Top 50 in the second half of the season.
The week begins again! Enjoy the games everybody!
