Past the 4th of July. Stats starting to mean something now. Those who are surging need to hang onto that surge for the long haul through the Dog Days. Those who are falling behind need to save their seasons. Let’s take our weekly look at the year that is moving towards “was,” rather than “is.”

Yesterday’s Rookie League Games
ACL Giants Black beat ACL Rockies, 5-4 (10 inn)
ACL Giants Orange lost @ ACL D’backs Red, 3-2 (7 inn)
Team Black gained a little more advantage from their rehab stints than Team Orange. Wyatt Mathisen hit a two-run homer and singled in a third run in Black’s 5-4 10 inning win. He even continued helping the team after he’d left the game, as his spot in the order turned into the extra-innings Manfred Man, with Javier Francisco racing around to score the winning run when a sacrifice bunt was thrown away.
Meanwhile, Jakob Junis continued his rehab with two innings of work for The Black. Junis was scheduled to go three innings and approximately 45 pitches in the outing. No pitch count data is kept in ACL games generally, but I think we can assume he neared his pitch limit after just the two. Junis allowed a solo home run among four hits. Obviously, the Giants are eager for his return at this point.
Anthony Rodriguez picked up two hits in Black’s game. He had a major slide, with his batting average dropping down to .219 and his OPS losing about .250 points in a couple of weeks. Over eight games, from June 18 to July 1, Rodriguez struck out a mind-boggling 15 times in 32 PA. But he’s turned things around a little over the past week, going 7 for 23, with a home run and “just” eight Ks in 23 PA. For the season that K rate is still over 35%, which, despite the power and defense, is probably not a great sign.
Kanoa Pagan pitched the final inning for the win, successfully navigating around the Manfred Man. The 23-year-old NorCal native is having a terrific comeback from TJ. He’s allowed just one run in 12 innings, and has a sparkling 21 to 3 K:BB ratio. He’s struck out 46% of the batters he’s faced and looks to be ready for the next challenge upwards.
There were plenty of rehab appearances for The Orange as well, including surprise starter Wie-Chieh Huang, who last showed off his big, loopy curve with Sacramento on June 11. Logan Wyatt has three hits and a walk in his first nine rehab PA — though, true to his nature, all three hits have been singles. Jimmy Glowenke struck out three times — which has been an issue for him this year. Overall, he’s 4 for 14, however, with just those three Ks. Adrian Sugastey singled and walked twice.
Team Orange’s game ended on a walk off wild pitch — leading Yoniel Ramirez (he of the big sweeper) to end the day with the odd “0.0 IP, 1 SO” line.
DSL Giants Black beat DSL CLE Red, 19-12
DSL Giants Orange won @ DSL Phillies White, 2-0 (7 inn)
These two DSL games were …. not very much alike! Giants Black went from winning 8-2 to a tie game in the wink of an eye, and then winning by 11 the next moment. Giants Orange squeaked out a Sac Fly in their first at bat and another in their final at bat and snuck away with a win. One game had seven total hits, the other had 28! Crazy!
Team Black had another big game from Ramon Peralta, who reached base five times and socked a triple for his first extra-base hit of the season. He’s now batting 12 for 25 in a big season. Moises de la Rosa also tripled and reached base three times, pushing his batting average up to .300 and his OBP to .462 in the 17-year-old’s first pro year. Guillermo Williamson had two doubles among his three hits — 11 of his 22 hits on the year have gone for extra bases. Cuban Jean Carlos Sio slugged his first pro homer.
Still not much going on for the big three signings over on Team Orange. Ryan Reckley continues to miss time. Dennys Riera is still looking for his first professional hit. And Juan Perez’ average if flirting with the Mendoza Line.

The stupid Braves’ trade wiped out my podcast recording yesterday so, sadly, no pod today. I’ll try to reschedule it soon though! I will have a piece coming out later today with my Organizational All Stars and Awards at the halfway point. Before the week is out, I’ll also drop a Draft Preview and, at some point in the coming days, a piece on organizational strengths and weaknesses heading into the trade deadline.
This weekend, I’m heading to Scottsdale to take in the ACL teams for a few days, so expect some video and first hand reports on those guys coming before the week is out.
It’s a new week everybody! Chance for something new and amazing to happen!
Enjoy your time in Arizona Roger. If you get the chance could you find the reason for Kwan Adkins being demoted two levels.
