Everyone’s tired. It’s hot. The season’s long. But these last six weeks will make a big difference for the statistical record that will follow them the rest of their careers. Can a big finish help make everything look better? Will a tired finishing month take an otherwise promising season and give it a negative gloss? One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been, as the old Greek said.
Meanwhile, here’s a snapshot in time, seventeen weeks in. It’s time for the weekly review of Stats, Leaders, and Transactions!
Sacramento River Cats: 44-61, 5th Place, 16.0 GB

Cover thy eyes! It’s ugly in here!

*IP level set at 70 for this week for all full season affiliates.
Looking for some good news? Both Beck and Hjelle have been stingy on the walks, and Beck has some of the best swinging strike rates in league. Hjelle has limited hard contact and has kept things on the ground.

Now THAT is a week of comings and goings! Pour one out for long-time Giants’ minor leaguer Patrick Ruotolo, whose season began with such promise. The 27th round pick in 2016 based his throwing motion on Tim Lincecum’s, and really never had anything but success in his minor league career prior to reaching Triple A. He was headed towards six-year minor league free agency this winter, so perhaps this move is meant to help him find another team prior to the post-season MiLB FA glut.
Richmond Flying Squirrels: 11-21, 5th Place, 13.0 GB
-20 Run Differential (second half)
Time for this group to pick things back up and get some momentum going for its first post-season appearance in eight years. Kinda difficult when the top four offensive performers are no longer with the club.

Other than big IP totals, there’s not a ton of good news here. Matt Frisbee has allowed the most hits in the league and Teng the league’s most walks. However, Kyle Harrison is fourth in the minor leagues in strikeouts (137), and leads all pitchers with 50 IP in strikeout percentage (41.0%)

Bad news on the injury front, as several 60-day moves guarantee we won’t be seeing several of the more exciting players on the DSL rosters for the rest of the year, unfortunately.
Rookie League Games
ACL Giants Black beat ACL Dbacks Black, 14-5
PJ Hilson had a four-hit night including a home run and Thomas Gavello homered and drove in four runs in his professional debut. Gavello was one of three members bc of the Giants’ 2022 draft to debut in the game (OF Wade Meckler from Oregon State and Tanner O’Tremba from UArizona also debuted in the game).
ACL Giants Orange beat ACL Rockies, 5-1 (8 inn)
UDFA Matt Higgins tripled in two runs in a two-hit pro debut of his own. 16th round pick Andrew Kachel out of Fresno State also debuted.
DSL Giants Black lost to DSL Angels, 11-5
DSL Orange won @ DSL Twins, 9-2
Let’s just sort of ignore Team Black getting boat-raced again to focus on many excellent things happening in Team Orange’s 20th win of the year. The Bonus Babies showed up! Juan Perez tanked his second home run of his career — a three-run shot that turned it into a heh-heh-heh-HEH LAUGHER! That was not only Perez’ second home run, it was his second extra-base hit in 125 AB!
And that came after Erick Arosemena had opened the scoring with an RBI double and Dennys Riera had ripped a double to score two runs and followed it up with an RBI single. Arosemena also walked twice and stole his 3rd base of the season, showing a bit of his toolsy nature.
There was other fun, too. Estanlin Cassiani had two more hits and a walk, pushing his average up to .382 and his OBP to a robust .430! It’s hard to make the average go up when you’re in such high rent district. Cassiani has a six-game hitting streak, during which he’s gone 10 for 26 and his average has risen just one measly point in that time! On the other hand, Jhosward Camacho’s 4 for 6 effort yesterday saw his average leap 27 points at a single bound. Camacho actually has a seven-game hitting streak, going 13 for 31. That streak has raised his average 61 points!

Week 17 Stats Review
Nice to see that Hunter Bishop has a legitimate shot at a 20/20 season, in addition to the speed power accomplishments of McCray and Brown.
It's actually "cover thine eyes".
