August! There’s only about five weeks left in the 2023 season — for the rookie leagues we can almost tick off the rest of the calendar in a count of days (but speaking of the rooks, there was some excitement in the desert last night, as you’ll see at the bottom of today’s post!)
Which means that these numbers are hardening into their final form. Only the most extreme level of final year push or fall is likely to change them that much from where they stand now. Remember Sean Roby putting up a 1.000 OPS over the final 40 games of the year in 2021, lifting his season OPS by nearly 200 points after August 1st? That’s the kind of run it will take for players to create substantial change to how we think of their 2023 as the season hits the back third.
