Once again, if you’re looking for this week’s Free For All Mailbag, check the Inbox, as that came in separately. And, if you’re looking for a new podcast, you’ll have to wait until tomorrow!
But if you’re here for stats, you’ve come to the right spot! Cause that’s what we’re bringing. Sample sizes are still tiny, but less so with every passing week. Let’s see who’s hot and who’s not!
Sacramento River Cats (10-11), 3rd Pl, 2.5 GB
+14 Run Differential
Apparently my little rant about eliminating divisions this year was off base. I’ve been set straight on that. We’ll still have divisions in our leagues as well as first and second half winners. So good on that!
SORTABLE TABLES: HITTERS PITCHERS
PCL LEADERS
Clint Coulter: Avg (8th), OBP (6th), Hits (9th), Runs (T-3rd), 2b (T-5th), RBI (7th), FB% (7th)
Michael Gigliotti: 2b (T-8th), K% (5th), K/BB (6th), SwS% (7th)
Shane Matheny: BB (9th)
Ford Proctor: BB (2nd), BB% (3rd), K/BB (9th)
Casey Schmitt: Hits (2nd), 2b (T-8th), RBI (T-8th)
Brett Wisely: OBP (5th), 2b (2nd), BB% (7th), LD% (4th)
It’s noticeable how little the Sacramento team appears in categories like SLG, Iso, HRs etc. Even pull percentage (which is directly correlated to HR) is really absent from this roster.
Also noticeable, no pitcher appears as a qualified player in the PCL and none appear on in leaderboards on any of the accumulation stats (eg, strikeouts). So a shutout for the pitching staff this week.

The Squirrels have the best run differential in the league at this point. Had they not dropped five one-run games, their record might be truly eye-popping at this point. Instead it’s merely very very good!

Matos has twice as many walks (10) as strikeouts (5). Who would have guessed that was coming! Again, not a lot of power stats for the team so far.
I’ve been trying to think of a better way to list pitching leaders but maybe there just isn’t one. Maybe take the innings limits away completely and throw everybody in together. Maybe don’t have leader boards for pitchers anymore. AARGH! So frustrating! Anyway, while isolating individual pitching performances has become increasingly difficult due to innings limits and the old standard for “qualified” pitchers, I can say that as a team, Richmond is leading the Eastern League in strikeouts by a substantial margin with 170. Their walks total (61) is the 9th lowest in the league — so excellent job of controlling the zone so far. Team ERA is fourth best.

Just as I was saying the Giants might be a team that had to rely on strong pitching and find a way to score runs, they found a way to score a billionty runs this week. So, that’s interesting.

Sacramento (TBD) at Oklahoma City (Erlin), 4:05 PM, MiLBTV
Richmond (Seymour) at Bowie (McDermott), 8:00 AM, MiLBTV
Eugene (TBD) at Vancouver (Dominguez), 7:05 PM, MiLBTV
San Jose (Whisenhunt) at Fresno (Franzen), 11:05 AM, MiLBTV
Hey, the start times are perfectly organized to allow you to watch all four games thanks to two different education days (one on each coast) and a Central Time start. Quite an assortment from which to pick, though I suspect many of you will hone in on the Fresno game to catch Carson Whisenhunt’s latest start.
A new series is afoot!
Just a reminder that there may or may not be a post summing up the action tomorrow, as my morning schedule is a little out of my hands. We’ll see what we can do. Consider There R Giants TBD for the day.
Best wishes for tomorrow!
Is McCray just the latest guy to struggle with the jump to High A? (Matos, Luciano, etc.) Or is there something else you've heard to account for his slow start.
