The season begins its exhale. This week we say goodbye to two leagues and four teams with a “stats review” marked FINAL — and bid a fond farewell to a champion. There won’t be many of these weeks left. We’re coming closer and closer to the snapshot that will forevermore determine what “2022” meant for all of these players’ development.
Let’s roundup the stats, the leaders, and the transactions (there were some good ones!) for everybody in the system. Week 20 is here. We won’t reach a Week 24.
Sacramento River Cats: 55-68, 5th Place, 13.0 GB
-76 Run Differential
You can argue that the purpose of the Triple A squad is depth for the major league club, buttressing the roster, that it’s not really there to compete. It’s relatively unimportant that Sacramento has basically been the worst team in the PCL (albeit the Rockies’ PCL affiliate has managed to be one half-game worse, lol). And yet, the Oklahoma City Dodgers’ .577 winning percentage is the best in the league. The Diamondbacks’ Reno Aces affiliate has a .553 winning percentage and is 1st place in the PCL West. There is something meaningful in those differences.
SORTABLE TABLES: HITTERS PITCHERS
PCL LEADERS*
David Villar: OBP (2nd), SLG (1st), OPS (1st), HR (T-3rd), RBI (T-3rd), BB (T-9th), BB% (4th), BB/K (7th), FB% (3rd), ISO (1st), wRC+ (1st)
Isan Diaz: HR (5th)
Bryce Johnson: SB (T-5th)
Austin Dean: 3b (T-7th), FB% (9th)
Heliot Ramos: GB% (5th)
Enmanuel De Jesus: FIP (10th), K% (8th), SwS% (9th)
Tristan Beck: FIP (4th), Games Started (T-9th), BB% (T-9th) K-BB% (10th), WHIP (10th), SwS% (8th)
Sean Hjelle: Games Started (6th), LD% (1st), GB% (1st)
Joey Marciano: Saves (8th)
Shelby Miller: Saves (9th)
*IP level set at 70 for this week for all full season affiliates.
Ramos’ wRC+, OPS, and wOBA are all the lowest of any qualified hitter in the PCL this year. Not so great. On the other hand, Villar has, by most measures, been the league’s best hitter. That’s pretty fantastic!
TRANSACTIONS (not including recall/options to/from SF)*
RHP Cole Waites re-assigned from Richmond
RHP Cody Carroll released
INF Drew Jackson released
RHP Ken Giles re-assigned from ACL Giants Orange
SS Will Wilson re-assigned to Richmond Flying Squirrels (off of rehab assignment)
INF Isan Diaz placed on 7-day IL
LHP Sam Long placed on 7-day IL
LHP Scott Alexander contract selected by the SF Giants
Richmond Flying Squirrels: 17-33, 5th Place, 15.5 GB
-24 Run Differential
For the season, the Squirrels have a record below .500, a negative run differential, and a 5th place position in the standings. It’s somewhat incredible that they’ll be hosting a playoff series in three weeks, but the org is certainly trying to beef them up to make a legitimate run at it. In the last three weeks, the Giants added (or re-added) Casey Schmitt, Vaun Brown, Will Wilson, Shane Matheny, Keaton Winn, Landen Roupp, and more to this roster in hopes that this talent can give the team a competitive edge come postseason. Let’s hope it adds up to some wins.
SORTABLE TABLES: HITTERS PITCHERS

Kyle Harrison: ERA (6th), FIP (9th), SO (T-9th), K% (1st), K-BB% (4th), Opp Avg (3rd), WHIP (T-8th), SwS% (7th)
Kyle Harrison is second overall in the minor leagues in strikeouts (167) and has the highest K% of any pitcher with >60 IP (39.7%).
Vaun Brown has the highest batting average (.346) of all qualified hitters in full season ball. His SLG is 6th highest (David Villar’s is 7th).

OF Vaun Brown re-assigned from Eugene
LHP John Gavin re-assigned from Eugene
Eugene Emeralds: 33-21, 1st Place, (1.5 Game Lead)
+89 Run Differential
Eugene already has a post-season appearance locked up (complete with hosting actual home games!), and they are cruising towards the end of the season with a team that has been about 10 games better than anyone else in the league. Now with Marco Luciano finally returned, Luis Matos playing better, and Grant McCray added to the roster, the question is going to be how the pitching stands up to all of the promotions that have sapped it of some of its best arms.

San Jose Giants: 27-27, 3rd Place, 6.0 GB
+28 Run Differential
The Giants probably aren’t going to make up the four games that separates them from the Modesto Nuts, but they did themselves a favor this week by knocking Modesto into 2nd place, two games behind the Fresno Grizzlies. If Fresno takes the top spot in the 2nd half, after having won the 1st half, then the team with the second best overall record takes the Wild Card slot. San Jose currently owns a commanding six game lead in that race. Only two weeks remain in the regular season.
SORTABLE TABLES: HITTERS PITCHERS
This pitching staff is a good reminder that after all the pomp and circumstances of the draft, what matters is how you produce on the field. This roster began the year with most of the pitchers selected in the 2021 draft. A lot of those guys have moved up — but it hasn’t always been the ones you might have expected to do so at the beginning of the season.

We’re absolutely going to get the traditional flurry of moves and transactions within hours of this post. I don’t know who all is going to be on the move, but expect a lot of bodies in motion on the San Jose roster today. Rumors of one of them has already crept out:

HONORS!!
The biggest honor there is:
Dominican Summer League
Giants Black: 22-38, 9th Place (19.0 GB), -74 Run Differential
In the 49-team league, only five teams had a worse winning percentage than Black’s .367, and only six teams had a worse run differential. Rough year at Felipe Alou Academy.

Jorge Martinez: GS (T-3rd), SO (5th), K% (3rd), K-BB% (5th), Opp Avg (T-9th), SwS% (3rd)

Pretty decent season for Jorge Martinez. Estanlin Cassiani and Luis Bermudez were the Giants’ DSL All Star Game representatives. Bermudez was in quite a few pitching category leaderboards, but was shut down the final three weeks.
End of the line for the DSL Giants. This is the year that was.

Any news on Brown?
