Welcome to the Weekly Stats, Leaders, and Transactions Roundup! Sorry I forgot to do a Mailbag this week, but I promise I’ll get another one up and running for next week. Maybe I’ll make it twice as long as penance! In the meantime, I’ve taken a completely different statistical view of the performers in the system in another post today, one that uses Baseball America’s RoboScout tool — so if you missed that one this morning, search through the Inbox. I think it’s pretty exciting!
But now to the traditional numbers that define seasons.
Sacramento River Cats (20-19), 2nd Pl, 3.0 GB
+26 Run Differential
Sacramento leapt from a tie for last place into second with a bravura 5-1 week! Now they get a chance to spring even further when they travel to 1st place Reno.
SORTABLE TABLES: HITTERS PITCHERS
PCL LEADERS
Shane Matheny: BB (T-9th), SB (T-7th)
Ford Proctor: BB (T-3rd), BB% (2nd), BB/K (7th)
Casey Schmitt: Hits (2nd), 2b (T-6th)
Kyle Harrison: SO (2nd)
If you dropped the innings limit down to 20.0, Harrison would lead the PCL in K% at 39.6%, and would be 6th in the league in ERA (3.47). Somewhat surprisingly, if you’re looking for areas of potential regression to worry about with Casey Schmitt, he actually has the sixth highest ground ball rate in the PCL, so maybe there’s some BABIP luck in that Hit total.

+29 Run Differential
The Squirrels are the only team in the Southwest Division with a positive run differential. At +29, they own the league’s third best differential, even following a week where the offense went quiet.

I probably should have noted yesterday that former A’s prospect Parker Dunshee has been signed as a free agent and joined the Squirrels this weekend. Dunshee was released in April by the A’s, after having been part of the organization since 2017.
Eugene Emeralds (18-14), 2nd Pl, 0.5 GB

The Giants’ best prospects on the High A team are giving them some of their worst production, which isn’t ideal. Hopefully that turns around soon.

LHP John Bertrand assigned to Eugene from San Jose
San Jose Giants (22-11), 1st Pl, 4.0 GA
+65 Run Differential
The Giants own the best run differential in the league, though the damned Dodgers’ affiliate sneaks out a better record by one game. The Giants lived a charmed life on their 12-game homestand; let’s see if the road treats them as well.

Not much determined here so far! Lots of morning baseball on a Tuesday as the Education Days continue.
There’s one more transaction to report for the week, but it’s unrelated to any of the affiliates: the Giants’ signed 24-year-old OF Turner Hill to a minor league contract. Hill, who was a two-time All American at Marietta College. As a senior, he hit .433 with 31 walks to just 6 strikeouts, and helped push Marietta to the D3 World Series. He played last summer in the MLB Draft League, and was preparing to start the year playing in the independent Frontier League when the Giants purchased his contract. The center fielder has reported to Scottsdale for extended spring, and will likely show up on one of the ACL teams when their season begins in just three weeks (oh, we’re gonna get busy here soon!). Hill fits the profile of another Damon Dues type of undrafted free agent that the Giants have signed in recent years.
Enjoy the games folks!
