If it's the "Keystone," why is it the last one we turn over?

So far in this year’s Depth Charts series, we’ve looked at:

  • Shortstop

  • First Base

  • Left-Handed Starters

  • Center Field

  • Catcher

  • Third Base

  • Right-Handed Starters

  • Corner Outfielders

You know, for a hot second there, I actually considered skipping the 2b Depth Chart this year. The ranks of MLB 2b are almost exclusively filled by former shortstops, after all. The Giants certainly exemplify that well. Tyler Fitzgerald, who will top our Depth Chart today, has spent most of his life at short. Thairo Estrada, who preceded him, came up as a shortstop. Donovan Solano was a defense-first shortstop when he originally came to the majors with Miami. Heck, even Wilmer Flores was originally a shortstop! It’s a position that is filled almost exclusively by the guys from a different position who didn’t quite meet the extraordinary physical demands that the big leagues place on The Six.

Almost! There are those occasional players who really are identified as 2b from the jump. Ahem….Tommy LaStella….cough/cough. So, while most of the people we will meet today are, indeed, players we have encountered elsewhere in the Depth Chart series, there are a couple of guys I think deserve a little more talk specifically as 2b.

Hopefully that means we can make today’s Depth Chart something of a mini-version. I’m not going to rehash the grades I’ve given out elsewhere, but I do want to drill down on a few specific cases. We’ll need a short one after the corner outfield group, and before the gargantuan reliever crop that we’ll visit on Friday.

Let’s turn two at the Keystone, as the Depth Chart series visits its last position on the diamond.
