This is the third of a series of depth charts, taking a comprehensive look at each position across the entire SF Giants’ organization. So far, we’ve looked at:
Ok, so I realize the last edition of the Depth Charts was a slight bit of a bummer, but don’t dismay! We’re rolling into the deep end of the pool now! As we make our way around the infield, we’re about to run into positions with some of the deepest crops of talent COMBINED WITH some of the closest-to-the-majors talent. The twin prizes of prospecting! And today’s position is one the deepest and most exciting of the entire series.
The Keystone, 2b, has been an almost magically transformative and unpredictable position in the Farhan Zaidi era of Giants’ baseball. It has played host to arguably Zaidi’s most productive trade (Thairo Estrada) and arguably his worst (Donovan Walton). It has seen the rise of one of the most popular Giants’ free agents of the last four years (minor league free agent Donovan Solano), and the fall of one of the most abused (Tommy La Stella). The position has seemingly never gone to plan since Farhan arrived — and yet it’s come up smelling like roses most of the time regardless.
Oddly, it’s also a position that seems in real flux this winter — despite the fact that the incumbent was, by WAR, the most productive position player on the team in 2022. Where it goes from here is anybody’s guess, but a quartet of hopefuls are waiting in the wings to take their shot at claiming it for them own sometime very soon. So buckle up! Today’s gonna be fun!
