Years ago I happened to be at a SJ Giants game where Puig was rehabbing. Of course, management made him the Beer Batter. This adds to the fan reaction and they know it.
Well a SF Giant was reading also, Romo. Sure enough they faced each other in the game and the stands were going nuts when Romo got two strikes on him. And the perfect Beer Batter event came next: Puig struck out! Biggest cheer of the night.
Wow. Over 3000 words on the Beer Batter. I am unexpectedly honored. Thanks for that video showing all the guys hustling--while trying to look like they are not hustling--to the beer station. Hysterical. One odd thing that made me think of asking about the BeBa is how nice those jerseys look. It looks like a lot of esthetic thought went into it. Replace the cheesey BeBa logo with a proper SJG logo and that would be a great jersey.
[sheepishly] Uhh, I went back and checked and--ahem--was off by a bit. 300+. My bad, but I loved your answer. The San Jose in-between innings is mostly a frozen screen with the score so almost all of what you related was totally new.
Having experienced the Beer Batter many times, Roger did an excellent job explaining it. And it really is hilarious to see people fly out of the stands when the deed is complete!! How can one not love minor league ball. Well done Roger. A superb Mailbag.
Just a quick note that Jack Payton was an 11th round pick. I’d say anything he can give to the ML club is a big plus. I remember he won a catcher award in college, but not sure whether they expected much from him in the pros
Question: FG shows Daniel Johnson with one option remaining. Did he have two before that bizarre transaction on 6/17 when he was optioned then immediately recalled (literally minutes later) due to Jerar Encarnación hitting the IL? Or does such a short-lived option not count? Thanks, as always, for your insight!
Two things about that: 1) Fangraphs doesn't update options until the end of the year, so it wouldn't have changed in real time like that regardless; and 2) there's actually a minimum number of days you have to be in the minors to use an option (I believe it's 20 days). So for instance, Fitzgerald has still not used his remaining option up despite being in the minors this week. Don't ask me why that is, its super arcane!
"BEER BATTER" follow -up story for PG.

The Mail Bag is always excellent but this one was even better than usual. Thanks for the great work.
Thanks as ever Roger. Likewise I'm keeping my fingers crossed for Ike Irish in the draft...
