I would think the strength of a farm system would be “plays SS but will likely have to move to the hot corner” or “great hands at the hot corner but will have to improve at pitch recognition”. If we don’t have guys like that we are kind of truly screwed
I don’t know. Those are two of the more elite skills in the game. I don’t know that there are very many orgs loaded with players like that. Probably not any. Schmitts your guy I guess and he’s easily the best defender the system has had since Matt Williams so I don’t think it’s surprising that there aren’t more of him. As for SS, Velasquez will move but he’s a 2b. Arteaga I don’t think will need to. Ahuna, if he can get healthy, probably doesn’t have offensive profile to move off short. But really even if someone were “blocked” you just move them somewhere else. Cincinnati brought up four different shortstop prospects last year and managed to fit them all into the lineup
Thanks for taking the time to answer my querry, Roger! Sadly it looks like Steven Okert got the "Thairo" from the Twins - unclaimed on waivers and outrighted to AAA in order to collect the rest of his guaranteed 2024 salary. Hopefully he can rebound and find a nice MLB spot for 2025. Thanks again.
