Thanks for the responses! On the Giants minor league starter workload, I do think it's worth noting how few of the injuries seem to be arm-related. José Álvarez is the only TJ on the MLB side (or even the notable prospects side, I think?), and among starters, Corry, Ragsdale, Simon, Murphy, Whisenhunt, and DeSclafani seem to be the only major arm injuries since start of '22 regular season. Not sure what Maldonado's injury is, too. In any case, that's a shorter list than some big league rosters have seen, let alone the full-season part of an organization. That does raise an interesting question as to whether the lack of innings is leading to other ailments that more work normally papers over (i.e., more back/leg injuries because you're not being built up for a big innings count)
Not too many as you say. Murphy I think wasn't very serious, sounds like Maldonado isn't either. Ragsdale is thoracic outlet syndrome, which isn't really arm related. Winn of course underwent TJ as did Roberto Monegro I believe and Ben Madison had shoulder surgery. Simon had TJ. Hopefully Whisenhunt's elbow won't go that way. I don't really know what Spencer Miles' injury has been, nor what kept Manzano and McDonald off the field so much this year, though I think they were core strains of some nature. As you say, it's not a huge list, but there has been some attrition this year
The FanGraphs write-up from June has Miles out with a back issue. I tend to think we'll keep seeing this as long as the arm injury count remains low, although they don't have quite as many starters in the lower minors for next year. If Handa/Bower aren't finally healthy and Whitman rushes to Eugene, the San Jose pitching staff could be a bit iffy in '24 (of course, Martin and Eldridge and Arias should have quite a bit of fun in the Cal League)
Yeah I saw that, but it was curious to me that he essentially never got any activity in at all this year from February through now. Hard to square that with back issue. Even Bednar pitched some this year. Don't know. SJ could have a similar rotation next year to what we see right now. Maybe they'll push Bostick as a starter or some of the other draft guys
I understand that a soon to be 29 year old doesn't really belong in the purview of a substack that focuses upon up and coming prospects...but have you heard anything as to the future plans for the two-way player that doesn't get much publicity in Ronald Guzmán? If my memory serves (very dicey proposition) he suffered a significant injury while pitching.
Yes, significant arm injury at end of ST. Very recently began rehab in ACL but only as hitter, played one or two games. Was just released this week (you'll find him in transactions section of today's other post)
Ah. That's what I get for glossing over transactions, my bad. Thanks for the information. I bet we'll see him in LIDOM this winter - he was the 2020/2021 MVP and Gold Glove (1B) winner for Gigantes del Cibao and seeing as he'll be auditioning for all 30 MLB teams (and all the teams in all the other leagues) this winter it'd make sense for him to prove he can still swing it/catch it. (I don't believe he has pitched in LIDOM and may not be far enough from his arm injury to entertain the idea)
Interesting little factoid at the end there on Webbs milb innings.

Last night definitely had some 'our little boy is all grown up' vibes
