Baseball America’s Geoff Pontes stops by to talk about modern pitch data and how smart clubs like the Giants are leveraging different looks. We also dive into the five Giants who placed on the BA Top 100, with some deep dives into the hit data on Marco Luciano, Luis Matos and Joey Bart. It’s a super-packed episode full of vertical approach angles, inverted vertical breaks, pitch shapes and more!
Geoff Pontes was ridiculously informative. many thanks for giving him free reign to provide what might be called a stat wonk's view of the sport. baseball might want to do more to make these sorts of analytics available as the next generation of baseball fans may be very different than mine and interested as much in the analytics as the athleticism.
Your guest made the comment that he could see Matos being the number one prospect in a couple years. I'm pretty sure he meant in all of baseball, not just the Giants? Even though Luciano was placed a lot closer to #1 than Matos, he didn't seem quit as effusive in his praise as with Matos. I wonder what that meant (if anything.)
Great pod Roger! Nice to hear about data we don’t generally have access to. But I also just have to say: Luis Matos is Venezuelan, not French — you’re supposed to pronounce the “s”!
