Great piece, Roger. I also am encouraged by the Giants having 4 affiliates make the post-season. I am in the camp that believes that winning and playoff game experience is an important part of player development.
"like a row of ants trying to move food towards the colony — it doesn’t always take the most efficient route, but over time the stores are filled up." Love your colorful writing!
Watching the D-Backs game and seeing Corbin Carroll as another '19 draftee in the majors made me think - what do you think will happen with Bishop and Wilson? Think they will protect from the Rule 5 or think the 40 man spots are too valuable when there's Luciano, Matos, Pomares to consider ?
I'm confused by this in a couple of ways. Who's Harris? And if you mean Michael Holmes (Director of Scouting who lives in NC), I haven't heard that he's going anywhere?
Scott Harris left to go to Detroit, and I apparently conflated his name with Holmes, the actual NC person. So, leaving out the NC reference, I’m still curious too see if the next non-Harris draft seems any different.
Ah Scott Harris. The NC part confused me. I don’t imagine that would have huge impact to be honest. I think the model they use reflects Zaidi’s priorities predominantly and Michael Holmes is still running the draft (and using the info of the same scouts who have been on the org for a long time. So I think continuity is more the order of the day than disruption. Plus since every draft is different, I don’t know that we’d know it if there was a big effect
Thank you for this. I've been telling anyone who would listen that the SF system was doing much better than the public perception would have you believe.

Prepare for several weeks of posts examine each and every one of these decisions! Coming soon!
It will be interesting to see if the draft strategy changes in any perceptible way next year with Harris gone. Maybe fewer NC natives?😉
