I have been probably unfairly pessimistic about Bishop because of his poor short-season performance. Like, there are extenuating factors! I understand that intellectually, but I still want to see something in his performance that makes me think the issues at the plate he's always displayed won't get worse as he faces better pitching. And his time in Salem-Keizer was not encouraging on that front.

Best I can hope, I guess, is that whenever there are minor league games again, he mashes and then I feel silly and deny I ever doubted him. It's not like there's any proof just sitting around on the Internet!

It always feels better to not have to resort to the extenuating circumstances!

Well, while I generally reserve my right to be critical without offering alternative ideas... I thought our first rounder should have been a pitcher. It seems that the Giants thought that Bishop was just so good that they had to go with him, but to me there were pitchers that I valued equally - Zack Thompson of KY, Alex Manoah of WVU come to mind as college guys. I wasn’t as clear on the HS arms. And I always consider the 3Bs like Brett Baty or even Cody Hoese.

I was generally with the Giants thought on that regard -- last year was generally regarded as the worst draft for pitchers possibly ever and I was hoping to stay far away from that category last year. Obviously this year my feelings are quite the reverse! As this is a deep and inspiring crop of pitchers

It is interesting (scary?) that the two guys the Giants apparently were debating (Bishop and Wilson) both had duds for pro debut (leaving scouts a little lacking in enthusiasm)

True. Makes me wonder which 3rd rounder will turn out to be the best player in that draft😊

I'm writing Friday's post and I can already here you violently disagreeing with me Lyle!

I completely agree on Bishop not being a CF or RF in the majors, so LF makes sense. At 6’5” he might make an interesting 1B assuming Pomares or whomever is good enough for LF and the team is just looking for a way to fit all their good hitters into the lineup (in a sort of reverse McCovey situation).

I was disappointed in the draft pick of Bishop, but hopefully the 1,001 coaches will be able to fine tune his approach to unlock his power on a more consistent basis. So, best case scenario he’s our cleanup hitter, and if not maybe a #6 with HRs and Ks.

Who did you prefer there, Lyle?

I more or less think 1b would be a waste of his abilities so hope it doesn't come to that. They have so much potential power on the way that he could be extremely valuable anywhere in that 4-5-6 area (he could be the Dusty Baker of the lineup!)
