There were Giants’ prospects who had good seasons, great seasons, even some who had disappointing seasons, but surely no prospect had as confounding a season as the subject of today’s post, RHP Kai-Wei Teng. Teng had stretches of dominance and stretches of misery. He piled up huge strikeout numbers while his command seemed to falter. He was one of the very first professional pitchers to suffer from the Spider Tack crackdown. There were steps forward and steps backward. He was truly the Charles Dickens Prospect of the Year — he had the best of times and the worst of times. And, at the end of it all, I was less confident in my ability to assess his progress than perhaps any other player in the system. The future really is an open road for this young man and the potential outcomes are many and varied.
