This is the tenth of a series of depth charts, taking a comprehensive look at each position across the entire SF Giants’ organization. So far, we’ve looked at:
Now we get to the tricky part! Thanks, in large part, to three consecutive pitcher-heavy drafts (24 of the top 31 picks over the last three drafts have been pitchers), there is a huge mass of arms in this organization with something interesting to offer. But whether that “something interesting” will play out as a little bit of depth, heft to help move trade discussions along, or, best of all, real tangible year after year big league value of some stripe — that is hard to make out from this vantage point. The fact that so many of them are still so early in their development (some, indeed, could hardly be said to have started their careers at all) — that doesn’t help any! I’ll include pitchers in today’s list who, if they end up having any big league value at all, will likely end up providing their use as relievers. That’s just the way of it. Still, appearing on today’s list first (as opposed to next Monday’s reliever list) means that they come with some fall back potential that helps boost their overall value up.
There are a lot of guys who fit in that “should be useful somehow” category, but, from the right-hand side at least, none who really go into that “this dude’s going to be a rotation stalwart” category the way that Kyle Harrison popped at the top of the left-handed category. That makes today’s task maybe the most difficult of all the depth charts — parsing out quality amongst a large quantity of more or less evenly spread talent.
I’ve put on my turban to help focus on the magic crystal ball in front of me. Curtains are pulled. Incense wafting through the air. Let’s see how we make out!
