We’re into the There R Giants Top 50. Over the next few months, I’ll write a post on each of the fifty players in my rankings, leading us back to spring. So far, we’ve covered:
We’ve talked about players who improved themselves during the 2020 shutdown. Those guys who took advantage of the time alone to make themselves stronger, more agile, or to add more oomph or more spin or break to their pitches — those guys jumped out at us when minor league play resumed in 2021. But for many players, the outcomes (or perhaps inputs) of that 2020 summer are still the mystery prize behind Door #3, waiting for the moment to reveal whether a box of laundry detergent or a brand new car is the reward. One such player is the subject of today’s post, Grant McCray — a player I wanted desperately to push into my Top 30. I couldn’t quite do that — there’s just too much depth of talent in the system right now — but I fully believe that, come this time next year, we’ll be seeing a much higher number next to McCray’s name in the rankings.
If I had to point at one guy as my pick to click, a player who I thought might go all Ryan Murphy/Jairo Pomares on the 2022 season, that guy would be Grant McCray. He was only able to give us a hint of that ability in his injury-shortened 2021, but the Giants were excited about what they got from him and believe this is a player who is ready to take off in the near future.
